In conjunction with the Westport Library's 100th birthday, the SpokenWord@the Library presents a five-part lecture series entitled "Mark Twain and the Emergence of the American Voice." On Sunday, May 4, at 2:00 pm, Shelley Fisher Fishkin, professor of English and Director of American Studies at Stanford University, speaks on "Mark Twain and African-American Voices." On Thursday, May 8, at 7:30 pm, Mark Schenker, Associate Dean at Yale College, gives a talk entitled "As Webster Is My Witness: Language, Lies and Laughter in Mark Twain." On Monday, May 12, at 7:30 pm, Dr. David E. E. Sloane, professor of English at the University of New Haven, explores Twain's comedy, exposing the American vision lying beneath the surface. On Wednesday, May 14, at 7:30 pm, Daniel Cruson, teacher and President of the Archaeology Society of Connecticut, gives an illustrated presentation entitled "The Impact of Mark Twain in Connecticut." And on Monday, May 19, at 7:00 pm, the lecture series closes with "beTwixt, beTween & beTwain," a two-act musical revue of Mark Twain's stories and wit written by composer/actor/director Danny Ashkenasi.
