Major benefit - it has a handle to enable you to get your dog

or scratching the heck out of you!

Dead Fish and Jelly Fish in Rowayton
Harborwatch has recently received the contract to monitor Five Mile River, and they've asked Downunder to run the program! Given that we're dedicated to helping the environment, and always looking for ways to learn more - we jumped at the chance.
In 2009 we will need trained volunteers to test the water on the river by boat (provided), and at various points upstream as far as New Canaan. Volunteers should be 16 years and up. The time commitment is small - about 2 half days a month from May through August.
Training is held in the fall and spring, is 4 weeks long, from 9:30am to 12pm. There is a small fee for the training. Harborwatch also hires a couple of interns each summer – so if that appeals to you, this is a headstart!
Volunteers will learn to do the physical testing for oxygen, connectivity, salinity, nutrients and bacteria. Insects are also a means to determining what’s going on in the rivers.
For more information please call Dick Harris at 203-227-7253x121 or email r.harris@earthplace.org, www.earthplace.org.

What we've been up to...

Quark Expeditions - world leaders in Polar Adventures, enjoyed an offsite outing with us that involved kayaking the Norwalk River, and a boat trip to Sheffield Island. 65 staff from all over the world congregated at their South Norwalk offices for the annual conference - it was great to hear some accents from Downunder! 1/2 of the group boarded the Seaport Association ferry for an excursion to Sheffield Island where Executive Director Susan Snider gave a presentation on the historic lighthouse and nature trails of the Stewart B. McKinley reserve. This is where Downunder plans to have a concession next year. And of course it wouldn't be a Downunder experience without kayaking - the other 1/2 of the group enjoyed a glorious day paddling the Norwalk River salt marshes!
Fermin Rosillo turned 80 and was treated to a kayak ride with his children and grandchildren, the Castro's.

A group of friends hired Sherry for a mid week yoga class - warmup on the dock, stretches on the kayak, and a 45 min class on the Fish Islands.
Sunday September 14th - International Coastal Cleanup

in a press release Downunder issued earlier this month
and photos from 2007
From 1-5pm on Sunday September 14th, Kim Beaumont from Downunder and Chris Cryder, Director of Habitat Restoration for the CT Fund for the Environment, led a group of paddlers to the Fish Islands for a beach cleanup. On the way, balloons on the shoreline lured us to a 'motherload' of trash we had to scale rocks to reach. Featured above, with Jim Frank on left, Chris Cryder middle, and Eric Bernstein forefront. Out at the Fish Islands, we had two families meet us with boats to help transport trash back. Mary and David Vernal with children Chris and Melanie, and Downunder employee Rick Trismen with his Father and Uncle. In total we collected about 210 lbs trash, up from last years. The majority of it was on one of the outer islands, less visited by boaters and kayakers, who are actually very environmentally reponsible bringing back their own trash, and often times, others. Plastic was at the top of the list, especially bottle tops - so if you do nothing else, please don't buy plastic bottles with caps - use fliptops, or be really diligent about disposing of them carefully. Better yet, use nalgene type bottles. Take a moment to visit this link and read about what happens to plastic that ends up in our oceans. It's pretty horrible, and will have a very definite impact on us, eventually.

Sunset Paddle and Wine Tasting
Thursday September 11th, 9 of us ventured downriver for a paddle of Tokeneke Creek, and some out to the Lighthouse (bit windy for the rest of us!) Followed by a fabulous wine tasting featuring Spanish and Argentinian wines supplied by the Rowayton Wine Shop. And some great cheeses and snacks.
Full Moon Paddle
Our last of the season and it was amazing! I'm so sorry that we didn't have room for everyone that was interested - given that it's at night, we keep the group as small as possible, with a high guide to client ratio. The moon was spectacular, and the tide as low as it gets. We headed out to the Fish Islands - a safe bet given our guides can paddle it blindfolded! Everyone had lightsticks and the guides had headlamps. It was incredibly still, despite winds of 17mph earlier in the day. We took our time, and stopped frequently just to enjoy being out there. Below is a picture of our first full moon paddle, back in June, with the Kayak for a Cause crowd.
The Non-Book Club

During the week, the "Non-Book" Club enjoyed a sunset paddle to Fish Island,
followed by a candlelit repast on the Rowayton Market deck.
Birthdays

Isabella Bean, Mom, Dad, bro, sis, and a bunch of girlfriends head out for a birthday treasure hunt!

Noah Alvarez and friends party on!

Jack Truwit turns 7, and paddling his OWN CT Tourism Bureau brings some visiting German clients
sit-in kayak, takes friends under the White to see just what a beautiful spot we have. British Air
Bridge to see the 'waterfall'. and Touristik will be pleased to know they made it onto
the highly visited Downunder Kayaking website!
Brendan's 101

Have you ever been to Brendans 101 deli and ice-cream shop, aptly located at 101 Rowayton Ave - just up from us? It's a darling deli/cafe with indoor and outdoor seating, and carries food from ice-cream to steak sandwiches... it's one of my favorite places. Last month, Brendan and Christine's eldest son - Gavin - turned 8 and celebrated on the water. Gavin is featured on the left above, and to the right, his Dad shows how easy it is to paddle standing up.
American Airlines In Flight Magazine
Last week a member of the Associated Press brought his wife and daughter kayaking, as he reviewed Downunder for an upcoming article in American Airlines In Flight magazine - scheduled for the Spring of 2009. Now wouldn't that be fabulous! The gentlman read about Downunder on a Lighthouse Map - these are the colorful maps you find at tourist centers, hotels etc. Great to see the marketing and advertising dollars paying off! Fingers crossed...
Tokeneke Club Family Kayaking
It's becoming more and more popular to have private kayaking parties offsite. In the last month we've taken between 2-10 kayaks to personal residences on the Sound, and private clubs. Most recently, Mitch and Alison Kreuch, Darien locals and members of the Tokeneke Club, arranged for 3 guides and a variety of kayaks for a member kayaking outing. We split into two groups - one led by Steve Annunziato that went around Long Neck Point to Pear Tree and the Darien river. The other group consisted of families, and was led by Kim and Jesse Ford, our newest guide. We focused on Scott's and Zieglers Cove ending up at the Fish Islands (of course!) Mitch has been coming to Downunder with staff groups varying from 8-14 for the past 3 years, for a few hours of fun on the water, lunch on a beach, and the joy of playing hooky.
A Triathalon!
A triathalon! Well, we didn't actually DO it, however we did help 18 participants quickly don their gear, for a race up river, under the White Bridge and back. Rowayton locals Volckert and Eliane van Reseema - originally from the Netherlands - arranged a course that had participants swimming, biking, running and paddling to raise funds for the Medical Knowledge Institute (MKI) a cause dear to their heart. Volckert and Eliane were married in Capetown, South Africa and have since 'adopted' a nearby township called Kayamandi. They have been able to persuade MKI to help improve life in Kayamandi through the creation of Health Information Centers (HIV education and free vaccination for over 3,000 people) and the development of a program to empower HIV infected females by providing them with beads to make bracelets that are for sale everywhere in the Netherlands and for a limited time at Below Deck here in Rowayton! (Note they are not on sale!) Proceeds go directly to the women who make the bracelets (seen in photo at left).

'Super Kayaker'
Jaden Volz turns 6. Jaden first started kayaking in the 'Mom and Me' program when he was 4, now he has his own kayak! Pictured below he's quietly paddling towards a green heron at the northern most end of Five Mile River, under the bridges. On the right is his birthday cake - a kayak! made by his Mom, Carolyn.

Camp finishes with Oysters!
Caith Bazoian and cousin Jeni were the last paddlers in the children's program, sneaking in a final few days before school starts. A field trip on one of the on/off storm days, took us to Sargent's Cove of CT - a shellfish Aquaculture business in South Norwalk, where we learnt how oysters are seeded and ultimately planted in beds out in the Sound. From there we went over to Norm Blooms oyster and clamming business, checked out the huge boats, and dredging equipment. Watched as fisherman chipped away at the clusters of shells to separate them, before cleaning, packaging and refrigerating for shipment throughout the country. Lastly, we enjoyed ice-cream and a science project, as we painted designs on clam shells with nail polish. Left in vinegar for a period of time (long probably), the vinegar will eat away the calcified shell, leaving a raised design. We're keen to see just how that works out! Thanks to Nina Miller for that great idea! The children learnt a lot about the algae oysters feed on, how useful their shells are for oyster beds, the impact storms, run off and pollution have on them, AND how quick and clever they are at filtering out all the bad stuff. Couldn't talk them into trying one though!

Time Warner
Turned visited late August for a guided paddle out to the Fish Islands. Also in August we took most of the fleet by Seaport Express to the Woodway Country Club, where Thomson Reuters had a fantastic event for staff and their families - climbing wall, bouncy castle, beach games. We brought along a water trampoline and led guided kayak outings throughout the afternoon. It was a blast, and our third year helping them create a memorable day. Later this month MySpace and Quark Expeditions will be coming through. September is a great time for outings... Keep Seaport Express in mind for outings as well - Barry Natale, owner, can accommodate 25 on this beautiful boat, and is starting to offer RIB outings that accommodate 6 passengers - a thrilling ride! Barry's business, Sound Navigation partners with us for kayak transportation to Sheffield Island, allowing clients to go kayaking AND to go on boat tours. We're about to accommodate up to 50 clients this way. More if we ally with Seaport Assn who own the Sheffield Lighthouse and offer a wonderful maritime program. We are in the process of arranging a kayak concession on Sheffield Island, more news on that in 2009!
