Sculpture Barn Art Center, A Hub for Artists and Art Lovers |
Sculpture Barn Art Center was founded by artists David & Carter Boyajian in 2003 and houses a fine art gallery, an Atelier for sculpture classes and Sculpture Field for outdoor exhibitions. Visitors are invited free of charge to stroll the Sculpture Field, peek in on the process in the Atelier's studios and view fine art in the Gallery.
The Gallery hosts a spectrum of art both visual and performed. The season opens in April and runs through December with a program of six exhibitions focused on sculpture, painting, and works on paper by noted national, regional, and emerging artists. The 3000 sq. ft. space is also used for performance events staged among the art and presents poetry readings, lectures, cabaret and art films related to the exhibits.
The 4000 sq. ft. Atelier offers classes and workshops year round in metal, stone and wood sculpture. Under the instruction of Master Sculptor, David Boyajian, students learn a contemporary approach to traditional materials using the technique of the modernists as it applies to three-dimensional art.
The Sculpture Field's 4-acre grassy slope exhibits outdoor sculptures year round that harmonize with the rural landscape. Artists are invited to loan pieces for long term exhibition while Sculpture Barn represents David Boyajian's work ongoing in the field.
The actual barns, built in 1942, have an historic provenance. Their last owner, Mike Nevelson, was also a noted sculptor. He converted the structures in 1963 into his studios and living spaces. His mother, Louise Nevelson, reigned as one of the most celebrated woman artists in the second half of the Twentieth Century. Sculpture Barn is committed to preserving this history via its resident artist and internship programs which provide a balance between the business of art in the gallery and the making of art in the studio. As a self supporting art center, staffed by member artists, Sculpture Barn aims to make the experience of creating and collecting fine art both educational and memorable through exhibitions, performance events, internships and residency programs.
Sculpture Barn is located in rural Western Connecticut nestled between New York's culturally rich Hudson River Valley region to the west, FairfieldCounty to the south and the Litchfield hills to the north, and is just an hour from mid-town Manhattan.
