CityCenter Celebrates the Rhythm of Danbury

Danbury's rich history, dynamic citizens and love of the arts make it a unique community. And nowhere can the Danbury community be celebrated better than downtown.  The Danbury Green on Ives Street provides the perfect location for one of the Northeast’s largest and longest-running free summer concert series with performances by a varied and eclectic group of entertainers every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. Thursday is Family night with children -- and the young at heart -- the focus of a variety of events preceding a  6:30PM concert. Whether at the Ice Arena, the Danbury Public Library, Escape to the Arts, A Common Ground or the Danbury Railway Museum, kids have the chance to try something new in a stimulating environment. And special treatment also extends to AG’s Barbershop on Ives Street which offers kids cuts for $5.

Upcoming Thursday night family concerts include New Hope Baptist Choir, a Danbury institution; oldies group The Barons on  July 26th,  reviving the hits of the 50's and Mactalla Mor, musicians who play traditional Irish music with a modern beat on August 2nd. An Ice Cream Social follows every concert at 8PM at the Danbury Ice Arena. The theme for Friday evening concerts is “Local Scene on the Green.” Featured are area favorites including Future Tense, Whitewood, Scratch, Locomotion, and Karibe Mambo. Concerts begin at 7:30PM. Be sure to bring a blanket and a picnic or try some tasty take-out from the many adjacent restaurants offering specials. Quality alternative, R&B, and world rhythms are in store for concert-goers on CityCenter Saturdays.  This Saturday series features Indian Ocean on July 21st, the big brass sound of The Young Ambassodors on August 4th and Les Yeux Noir on August 25th.  Saturday concerts begin at 7:30PM.

There’s more going on downtown too! Scaffolding can be seen at the tri-corner building on Kennedy Avenue and Main Street where CityCenter, in conjunction with the City of Danbury, the Danbury Cultural Commission, Escape to the Arts/Regional YMCA, and the Aldrich Art Museum, will be installing the first outdoor art piece as part of the Gateway Mural Project. Just prior to the Taste of Danbury (this year September 8th and 9th with 80’s rocker Eddie Money), CityCenter will dedicate this mural.  This year’s Taste of Danbury will be reminiscent of the great fair days gone by.

Also adding new life to the Kennedy Park area is a reinvigorated Farmers’ Market beginning Friday, July 13th.  Each successive Friday, from 11AM to 4PM until the end of October, farmers will bring fresh produce, bedding plants, shellfish from the shoreline, homemade breads, goat milk products and more. Enjoy!
